MMDA Collects Over 180 Tons of Campaign Materials in NCR

Over 180 Tons of Campaign Materials in NCR Collected by MMDA

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) reported that they have gathered more than 180 tons of campaign materials in NCR alone.

MMDA reported that they were able to collect about 180.87 tons of campaign materials across the National Capital Region since May 7, 2022. The agency said that they were expecting more garbage compared to the 2019 elections.

The agency gathered about 200 tons of campaign materials during the 2019 midterm elections. Most of the campaign materials were tarpaulin and campaign paraphernalia made from paper has been reduced, according to MMDA Metro Parkway Clearing Group Francis Martinez.

The collected campaign materials will be brought to the solid waste granulator of MMDA in Tondo, Manila. The garbage will be recycled and turned into bricks and hollow blocks.

The environmental group EcoWaste Coalition is urging the agency to reuse and make those materials useful. Several campaign posters made of tarpaulin have been turned into bags, which can be a good source of income.

EcoWaste Coalition National Coordinator Aileen Lucero together with MMDA urged the politicians to remove their own materials after the election period.

“Ang unang magagawa ng kanditato ay sila mismo ang manguna sa pagkolekta nito. Huwag na nilang iaasa sa MMDA o doon sa ibang ahensya,” Lucero said.

MMDA started to remove the campaign posters and streamers on Wednesday (May 11, 2022). Imus City mayor-elect Alex Advincula has also led the removal of posters across the streets of Barangay Buhay na Tubig.
