In English, sentences are classified into four types and they are determined according to their purpose. They are the following:
- declarative sentence (statement)
- interrogative sentence (question)
- imperative sentence (command)
- exclamative sentence (exclamation)
And in this article, we will further understand what is an imperative sentence and construct one. The function or purpose of an imperative sentence is to give a command. The sentence indicates to do something and often ends in a period (.) or an exclamation point (!).
An imperative sentence expresses a direct command, request, invitation, warning, or instruction. It has three elements: implied second person, imperative verb, and punctuation.
In this form of a sentence, the subject is understood to be YOU. It contains no specific subject because the subject would have to be YOU. An imperative sentence can be positive or negative.

Give me coffee. | Don’t give me coffee. |
Close the door. | Don’t close the door. |
The positive imperative sentence uses a positive verb while the negative imperative sentence usually begins with the verb “don’t” or a negative verb form.
Here are some sample imperative sentences:
- Remember to pay the bills tomorrow.
- Leave the keys under the doormat.
- You must attend my wedding next week!
- Put your phone away if I am talking.
- Marry me.
- Be there at six sharp.
- Get out!
- Close the door when you leave.
- Please be quiet!
- Don’t eat all the cookies.
