Metro Manila Wage Board Gives Decision on Call for P470 Salary Increase

Metro Manila Wage Board Decides on Petition to Raise Minimum Daily Salary

METRO MANILA WAGE – The Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity has decided on the call for a P470 increase on the minimum daily salary.

A lot of people are financially struggling for more than a year now since the COVID-19 pandemic made its impact felt by almost everyone. The crisis led to the shutdown of several companies and businesses in the Philippines.

Many businesses failed to cope with the demands of the pandemic. For weeks or months, they only incurred expenses and losses amid strict quarantine measures that prohibit or limit the operation of most non-essential businesses. Even the essential businesses were urged to adapt to the new normal setting.

Amid a lot of people losing their job or a part of their income, the series of oil price hikes added challenges to many individuals’ financial capacity. Recently, the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) filed a petition seeking an increase in the minimum daily salary in Metro Manila.

Based on a report on Inquirer, in its petition, the TUCP called for a Php 470.00 increase on the minimum daily salary in Metro Manila raising the wage from the current Php 537.00 to Php 1,007.00. The petition was filed at the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity (RTWPB).

In the said petition, the group stressed that the current minimum salary can only support meals that are deficient in nutrients. It also cited that the Php 3,874.00 from the Php 12,843.48 monthly income is not enough to cope with the expenses of transportation, health, education, communication, etc.

The Metro Manila wage body has recently decided on the call for an increase in the minimum daily salary in Metro Manila. According to the report, the RTWPB junked the petition citing that it is beyond its jurisdiction.

In a resolution dated March 22, the Metro Manila wage body explained that granting an across-the-board minimum wage hike is not covered by its jurisdiction as it cited the contention of the Employers Confederation of the Philippines (ECOP) against the said salary increase. The body also cited that its function is limited to fixing and determination of the minimum wage in the region.
