Barangay Execs Warned on Illegal Endorsement of National and Local Bets

The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) has warned the barangay officials over their illegal endorsement of national and local bets.

Undersecretary of the DILG Martin Dio has urged barangay officials, particularly barangay captains, against endorsing any candidate in the May 9 election. According to the rules, only the President, Vice-President, senators, congressmen, mayors, and vice mayors can support any political candidate in the next election.

The barangay captain in San Jose Del Monte, Bulacan, publicly announced his support for the presidential and vice-presidential candidates in the May 2022 national and local elections, according to Dio. According to the complaint, the barangay captain publicly exhibited the selected candidates’ campaign materials at his table and within the barangay halls, which Dio said was against the law.

Despite the infraction, Dio has remained silent on whether the barangay commander would be sanctioned or punished for breaking the Omnibus Election Code. Unlike the aforementioned authorities, the DILG executive reminded the barangay officials that they must stay apolitical and that they are not allowed to promote any political betting as required by the Omnibus Election Code.

Diño also encouraged barangay officials to keep an eye on anyone who post political campaign materials on cable lines, power poles, and government buildings. He warned the public that they may face arrest if caught with illegal act.

To avoid being entangled in election crimes, Diño and Civil Service Commission (CSC) Commissioner Aileen Lizada ordered barangay officials not to drive government vehicles with photographs of political hopefuls. Lizada insisted that government personnel should not participate in any partisan political activities that include members of the PNP and AFP.

He also advised government employees to be cautious about what they wear. According to him, this may be seen as part of some candidates’ political campaigning.
