Bongbong Marcos Jr Won’t Stop Franchise Renewal of ABS-CBN if Elected
Presidential aspirant Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr will allow the ABS-CBN to renew their franchise if he will be elected as President.
Bongbong has stated that if elected president of the Philippines, he will not deny a media conglomerate’s request to renew their franchise after being shut down due to infractions. He said he’ll let them in provided ABS-CBN corrects and complies with the claimed infractions.
“It’s not up to me to re-open ABS-CBN. It’s not up to the President, it’s up to the Congress, it’s up to the House of Representatives,” paglalahad ni Marcos sa programang,” Marcos said on Korina Sanchez’s Upuan ng Katotohanan program.
“Ayusin lahat yun [mga umano’y paglabag] tapos ilapit nila ulit sa franchise committee. Edi maganda yung posibilidad na i-grant nila yung franchise,” added Marcos.

It should be remembered that ABS-CBN lost its free TV broadcast on May 5, 2020, due to a cease and desist order issued by the NTC when their license to operate expired. ABS-CBN responded to a number of complaints in Congress two months after it went off the air, but the business was unable to get another 25-year franchise.
The House Committee on Legislative Franchises voted 70-10 to deny the company’s request for another franchise. ABS-purported CBN’s issuance of Philippine depositary receipts (PDRs) to foreign investors, dual citizenship of ABS-CBN chair emeritus Gabby Lopez, TV Plus Box, KBO pay-per-view, and other problems were examined before Congress.
Despite being a “critic” of the Marcos family, the presidential candidate said that the government should give the television firm an opportunity to renew its franchise. The first time the government shut down ABS-CBN was in 1972, just after Bongbong’s father, the late President Ferdinand Marcos, declared martial law.
