Barangay Official, Companion Arrested Over Election Gun Ban Violation

Police authorities arrested a barangay official and his companion for allegedly violating the election gun ban by the Commission on Election (Comelec).

According to GMA News, the barangay official and his friend were detained at a checkpoint put up in Cotabato City during the election gun prohibition. The accused were found in possession of a loaded M-16 rifle and a handgun.

According to Cotabato Police Chief, the arrest was made after the defendants reportedly failed to show paperwork, including weapons prohibition exemption papers. Cops stopped them after noticing a rifle barrel behind their pickup truck.

The suspects avoided eye contact with the reporters and claimed that the guns were for self-defense. The Philippine National Police (PNP) said on Thursday that 17 people were detained lately for breaching the gun ban in connection with the 2022 elections, bringing the total number of people arrested to 410.

The 17 new violators were all civilians, according to PNP statistics. The PNP, as of now, has confiscated 20 firearms, 99 rounds of ammunition, and five dangerous weapons were seized from them.

New violators were apprehended in Samar, Cebu, Pampanga, Bulacan, Calabarzon, Central Luzon, Cagayan de Oro, Davao, Ilocos Norte, and the NCR. From January 9 to June 8, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) Resolution No. 10728 forbids the carrying, carrying, or transporting of guns or lethal weapons outside of one’s home and in all public places.
