Pole Vaulter EJ Obiena to Undergo Knee Surgery to Fix Knee Issues

Philippine’s star pole vaulter EJ Obiena is scheduled to undergo knee surgery this January 11, 2022, to fix his knee issues.

Obiena will have surgery on his left knee in Stuttgart, Germany, at the Southwest German Center for Sports Traumatology. The procedure on the Pinoy Olympian will be performed by Dr. Dimitr Alexander Jontschew, a well-known orthopedic surgeon and medical director of the abovementioned institution, which is accredited by the International Society of Athroscopy, Knee Surgery, and Orthopedic.

According to one of Obiena’s mentors, American businessman Jim Lafferty, the athlete’s meniscus – one of the most prevalent knee problems – would be repaired. He explained that the MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) result on Obiena’s knee was unclear, so the operation would be unique.

Obiena will be awake throughout the procedure. He went on to say that they’ll clean up the meniscus, which is a really simple surgery. The doctor is now going to take a look around, if he notices something else that has to be corrected, he wants EJ to be awake so he can ask him, “Do you grant me permission to do x or y?” on the spot.

Due to the procedure, the world’s number six pole vaulter will be unable to practice for a week. However, he is anticipated to recover in time to compete in the Init Indoor Meeting in Karlsruhe, Germany on January 28.

We shouldn’t hold great hopes for his performance in such a contest. In February, Obiena will compete in the Asian Championship. The Asian Indoor Championship will be contested in Kazakhstan from February 11 to 13.

In the pole vault, Obiena holds the national and Asian records with a height of 5.93 meters. He completed it in September of last year at the International Golden Roof Challenge in Innsbruck, Austria.
