Zipper Test – What Is Zipper Test and How To Measure It

Here are some of the things to know about zipper test, how it is done, and how it is measured.

ZIPPER TEST – Shoulder flexibility test is also called the zipper test and here are some of the things you might want to know about this.

To measure how mobile and flexible your upper arms and shoulder joints are, the shoulder flexibility test or the zipper test is done. It is done by reaching one hand behind your neck and down along your spine. After that, move the other hand behind your back and up toward your top hand. It is measured through how close your hands are being in that position to each other.

By doing this test, your aim is to bring your fingertips together.

Here’s a detailed procedure on how to do this:

  • Stand straight.
  • Lift your right arm, bend on your elbow across your back, and stretch to the farthest that you can do.
  • With your left arm, fold on your elbow up across your back and attempt to reach the fingers of your right hand. This position will make you look like your zipping something up over your back.
  • Do the same thing with your left hand.

For the person who is administering the test, see whether there’s a gap or an overlapping with the fingers. If there’s an overlapping, there will be a positive score but if there’s a gap, measure the distance by putting a negative on it. And if the fingers touch, the score will be zero.

Meanwhile, heart rate monitoring, questionnaires, accelerometers, and pedometers are all involved to evaluate a person’s physical activity. There are several ways to test your fitness. Some of them are:

  • Resting heart rate for aerobic fitness.
  • Push-ups for upper-body muscular endurance.
  • Head turning for neck flexibility.
  • 12-minute walk/run for cardio capacity.
  • Plank for core stability.
  • Loop-the-loop for shoulder mobility.
  • Vertical jump for explosive power.
