Only Enchong Dee will face the cyber libel case
Kapamilya actor Enchong Dee was indicted over a cyber libel complaint that was filed by DUMPER Representative Claudine Bautista-Lim and the prosecutors in Davao Occidental approved this.
Based on the article in Manila Bulletin, originally, the complaint that the congresswoman filed included singer-actress Agot Isidro, comedienne Pokwang, and comedian-talent manager Ogie Diaz.
The said celebrities expressed negative reactions when photos showing the “lavish wedding” of Bautista-Lim in Balesin circulated on social media amid the pandemic. Through their social media posts, the celebrities criticized the congresswoman and because of this, the latter received a massive amount of bashing online.
However, it was only Enchong Dee who was indicted as the prosecutors said that the other celebrities were just exercising their freedom of expression. “This Office could not attribute malice and ill motive to the said respondents who have taken upon themselves to be the so-called watchdogs of our society,” the prosecutors said maintaining that Enchong did more than that.
The prosecutors said that the actor imputed a crime against Bautista-Lim which is “malversation of public funds” and this has put the congresswoman in a bad light. To recall, in his now-deleted tweet, the actor said, “The money for commuters and drivers went to her wedding. Let us not prolong this conversation and don’t say otherwise.”
When it comes to the apology that Enchong issued a few days after his controversial tweet, the prosecutors said, “Calling someone a thief, without proof and with heavy malice, is where to draw the line as this is already libelous.”
The actor has not spoken yet about this issue. Reportedly, he was advised not to speak regarding the legal matters. If the hearing commences, the actor needs to go to Davao Occidental, and definitely, this will be inconvenient for him, aside from the fact that based on the case filed against him, he is being ordered to pay Php 1 billion.
