CAMBODIA – The country confirmed its first case of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 which is a variant of concern.

The World Health Organization (WHO) warned countries about the Omicron variant of COVID-19. First recorded in South Africa, the said variant was reported as “heavily mutated” thus nations were advised to boost efforts to prevent the entry and spread of the said variant of concern.

Several nations were quick to implement travel bans on countries with confirmed cases of the Omicron variant of COVID-19. Furthermore, some countries postponed the easing of restrictions despite the holiday season now.

Recently, another country, Cambodia, recorded its first case of the Omicron variant of COVID-19. The patient has a travel history to an African country.

Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, the first case of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 in Cambodia is a 23-year-old woman who has recently visited Ghana. He arrived in the country through Dubai and Thailand.

As of this writing, the country has recorded a total of 120,382 cases of COVID-19. The death toll is at 2,992.

Currently, studies and monitoring of the behavior of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 are ongoing. Several national governments of different countries reminded the people to continue observing the proper health protocols. The measures in some countries were tightened once again amid a surge in the cases or a possible spike.

Nations now are in pursuit to achieve herd immunity or population protection against the virus through vaccination. Different brands of vaccines including Sinovac, Sinopharm, Astra Zeneca, Moderna, Pfizer, Janssen, Sputnik V, and Sputnik Lite were developed.

WHO, after declaring COVID-19 a pandemic, admitted that it might be a long-term battle for countries. It warned nations not to let their guards down early to prevent another surge in the cases.
