Nancy Binay Called the New BSP Design for P1,000 Bill “Pambabastos sa mga Bayani”
Senator Nancy Binay criticizes the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’ (BSP) new design for the P1,000 bill, calling it defamation of Philippine heroes.
The BSP’s decision to change the banknote design, according to the former vice president’s daughter, is an insult to heroes, who were formerly featured on the bill. Binay went on to say that the two houses should be concerned about altering it, just as they should be concerned about changing the name of the road and public schools.

She added that it may be given to the Philippine National Historical Commission, particularly to Josefa Llanes Escoda, Gen. Vicente Lim, and Jose Abad Santos, heroes of the Second World War, and that it would be replaced by an Agila or Philippine eagle. She went on to say that not only were heroes gone, but animals and plants were also given preference.
Meanwhile, Rep. Carlos Isagani Zarate, the House Deputy Minority Leader and a Bayan Muna party-list member, chastised the BSP for omitting the country’s heroes from the new currency’s design. The scientific name of the Philippine eagle is alleged to be misspelled, and the country’s heroes have been ‘erased.’
“While it is not wrong to feature Philippine flora and fauna in our banknotes, but it should not be at the expense of removing totally our heroes who stood and fought for our rights and liberty,” Zarate said in a statement.
“In effect also denigrating their historical contribution in the defense of our freedoms and the fight against foreign aggression,” Zarate added.
He claimed that the BSP’s actions appear to have aided some parties and individuals in the Philippines who wish to modify the country’s history. Zarate requested that the BSP consider giving the heroes, as well as the animals and plants present in the country, a “revisionist makeover.”
