When the accident happened, the victim was at home in Barangay Kadaklan, Loakan Apugan. Pan-oy was cleaning his 9mm Jericho pistol when it abruptly erupted and wounded him, according to Baguio City Police.

Pan-oy was taken to the hospital, but he was confirmed dead when he arrived. The PNP is still investigating the event to make sure there was no foul play involved.

Meanwhile, an unintentional shooting within a police training camp in La Union has resulted in gunshot wounds to a police instructor and a trainee. According to the Police Regional Training Center’s original report, they were in the middle of a firearms familiarization exercise when the gun malfunctioned and discharged a cartridge.

The weapons familiarization sessions include the use of a.45 caliber handgun. The bullet struck the police trainee’s hand as well as the police instructor’s let.

To avoid such incidents during police training courses that feature live shooting exercises, PNP Chief Dionardo Carlos believes that the firearms training standards should be reviewed. If such incidents may occur in training, even in controlled environments, Carlos believes they can occur at any time during routine police operations involving firearms and live ammunition.
