House Approves Bill Providing Rights to Married Women to Retain Maiden Surnames
PHILIPPINES – The House of Representatives approved the bill allowing married women to retain their maiden surnames.
Nowadays, women have to change their maiden surnames into their husband’s surname after marriage. The male’s surname is usually given to the children and wives even bear it until the end of their life.
However, ladies can get rid of their husband’s surname through divorce and annulment but it is quite expensive.
Recently, the House has approved the House Bill 10459 on its third and final reading during the plenary session. The new bill aims to give right to married to retain maiden surnamed even after marriage.
The House Bill 10459 is seeking to amend for the purpose Art. 370 of Republic Act 386, otherwise known as the “New Civil Code of the Philippines”. It has been approved with 227 affirmative votes.
The new measure seeks to provide equal rights to both male and female by granting women the right to retain their last name. It’s up to them whether they will use their maiden or husband’s surname after marriage.
The bill grants ladies to use the following:
Maiden first name and surname;
Maiden first name and surname and add her husband’s surname;
Maiden first name and her husband’s surname; or
Husband’s full name, but prefixing a word indicating that she is his wife, such as “Mrs.”
