DOH Says No Need To Reimplement Face Shield Policy Despite Omicron

OMICRON – According to the Department of Health (DOH), there’s no need to bring the face shield policy despite news of the Omicron Variant.

For two years, the Philippines was among the only countries to have a face shield policy implemented. As such, people can’t go inside public establishments such as malls without face shields.

Because of this, people started joking online that face shields merely became “valid ID’s”. Still, most wear the face shields out of “requirement” rather than safety. After showing it to security, most would just place it above their heads.

But, following Duterte’s announcement that face shields would be voluntary, the public is hoping that it won’t get reverted. However, due to the Omicron variant, remarks of a possible proposal of its re-imposition loomed.

Still, despite the Omicron threat, Dr. Althea De Guzman, DOH’s epidemiology bureau director said:

As transmission goes down, we really need to open sectors, but also in a safe manner. Right now, the (face) mask will be able to provide us that benefit or protection

Although the De Guzman said that it would be up to the private establishments to implement the face shield policy. For the meantime, she emphasized that there’s no need for face shields as the country has a “very low transmission level”.

Currently, areas in the Philippines under Alert Level 2 have face shields as a voluntary choice. Unfortunately, that may change as Interior Secretary Eduardo Año floated the idea of re-implementing the policy when the Omicron variant enters the Philippines.
