The Tokyo Olympian appeared alongside his coach, Petrov, who verified that all payments had been made and that documentation had been presented to PATAFA to prove it. Obiena claimed the claims levied against him were “slander and defamation of character” with the “goal to damage his reputation,” despite admitting there may have been mistakes in his paperwork.

Obiena stated that any probe into the incident is welcome. He added that the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC), the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and World Athletics had all received written complaints.

It emphasized that the only answer was to end the probe completely and publicly, followed by a public apology. stated that he had nothing to hide and that the money he got from PATAFA was being audited.

It also can’t help but admit that, as a result of the incident, he’s considering retirement because he can’t afford to work in such a state. Nonetheless, Obiena stated that this is a betrayal “by specific people,” rather than “a betrayal from my country.”

He did not rule out the possibility of continuing his pole vaulting career and competing for the United States in future competitions. Obiena, on the other hand, made it plain that it was up to PATAFA to take the appropriate steps to resolve the problem.
