Bui Tuan Lam, a Vietnamese street seller, was arrested after posting a video on Facebook copying Salt Bae by sprinkling green onions in a bowl of noodles. “Green onion bae,” he nicknamed himself.

Another video was posted by Lam, a well-known former activist, and human rights advocate, on his Facebook account where he can be seen questioning the authorities about his impersonation of Salt Bae. When Lam asked why he was taken to the precinct, he said he did not get a clear answer from the officers.

However, for Vietnamese netizens, the reason for doubting the noodles vendor was a previous TikTok video that went viral in Vietnam, in which a high-ranking Vietnamese official was seen enjoying a slice of gold-plated steak at the salt bae restaurant. Vietnamese citizens were outraged by the video.

Netizens questioned how the Vietnamese Minister of Public Security was able to purchase such an expensive steak for $ 1,975 when his monthly salary was estimated to be only $ 660. After attending the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Scotland, the minister and other Vietnamese officials flew to London, where Salt Bae’s newly launched restaurant is located.

Although the contentious video was removed from Salt Bae’s Tiktok account, netizens duplicated it before it was taken down, allowing it to spread. According to netizens, their official’s fine cuisine is a sign of the official’s insensitivity to the condition of the 98 million Vietnamese who are penniless and unable to flee owing to the pandemic’s nearly two-year economic collapse.
