Manila Bay Officials Says IT Can’t Control Large Crowds At Dolomite Beach
LARGE CROWDS AT DOLOMITE BEACH – According to the Manila Bay office, the masses of people flocking the Dolomite beach are out of their control.
Following the public opening of the controversial beach, thousands of residents came through to visit last Sunday. However, with the sheer quantity of people, many fear a possible outbreak.
During an interview with CNN, Manila Bay Coordinating Office executive director Jacob Meimban said: “At the moment, everybody is coming in. We do not have that control“.
Currently, the office said it is struggling with the number of visitors to the 1.2-hectare beach. Moreover, the MBCO said it could only accommodate up to 5,000 people.
But, following officials’ decision to lower the Alert Level in Metro Manila from alert level 4 to 3, thousands gathered in the dolomite beach. According to Meimban, the number of visitors had possibly reached tens of thousands.
“We did plan to have the number of people limited there but we did not expect such overwhelming numbers that came”, he said.
Because of the massive turn-out of residents on the beach, the MBCO said it would impose some adjustments. Based on an article from CNN, the beach would only open its gates for those who present their vaccination card.
However, this could cause chaos outside, said Meimban. As such, he said that his office would evaluate new protocols with partner agencies.
On Sunday, the Philippines confirmed over 5,000 new COVID-19 cases. This was higher than last Wednesday’s peak of 3,656 new infections.
