Fake Bishop Nabbed for Soliciting Donation from Office of the Senators

NBI Arrest Fake Bishop Soliciting Donation from the Office of the Senators

Personnel of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) arrested a man posing as a fake bishop for soliciting donations from the office of the Senators.

After being caught in an entrapment for obtaining P300,000, the NBI-Special Task Force apprehended a man outside the Senate right away. The investigation into the modus began after Senator Vicente Tito Sotto’s office allegedly received a letter from a Bishop in Camarines requesting funds for the upcoming Christmas season.

However, according to the investigation, there is no Bishop with that name, and the archdiocese denies asking the politician for money. John Kurtresco, the suspect, claims that his friend only told him to grab the money from the Senate.

However, the accomplice appeared to have promised him P50,000 from the money obtained through text messages. He said that he simply did what he was told because he needed money for his child’s birthday celebrations.

Lawmaker Sotto was not the only senator targeted by the donation group, according to the NBI. This is the third case they’ve received with the identical modus operandi.

As a result, they have issued a warning against similar scams, particularly during the current election season. Earlier, the suspect told the National Bureau of Investigation that the suspected mastermind, Dennis Burton, was being held at the Manila City Jail.

Based on the sim card used, the NBI promptly contacted the warden and determined that he had ordered the crime. Both have been charged with estafa and identity theft.
