FACE SHIELD EXPIRATION – Amid the Senate’s investigation into Pharmally, the Department of Health answers why face shields “expire”.

Probing into Pharamally’s alleged overpriced medical supplies continues. Recently, a whistleblower who works at one of Pharmally’s warehouses said they had repacked old, folded, wet, and even dirty face shields.

Furthermore, the whistleblower claimed that admins of the firm instructed them to change the stickers on the face shields from 2020 to 2021. Additionally, Pharmally’s Krizle Grace Mago also confirmed changing the certification stickers.

Meanwhile, as a response to the issue, Department of Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire explained why the face shields “expired”. Based on an article from ABS-CBN, Rosario said:

Just like any medical commodity, mayroon din pong tinatawag na shelf life. Ito pong face shields na binibili namin is not for the community

Along with this, Vergeire said that medical-grade face shields can possibly deteriorate over time. “Ito pong foam na ito over time, nag-pupulverize po ‘yan, nadudurog. ‘Yung iba nagdi-discolor po ‘yan“, she explained”.

However, Verigeire said that these “expired” face shields aren’t dangerous if used beyond their shelf life. Still, she highlighted that medical workers should use complete and quality supplies to remain protected against infection.

On the other hand, the health undersecretary said that the DOH won’t accept broken or discolorated medical supplies. Finally, she said that the DOH’s concern is that the items were delivered to “all” health workers to inspect.
