Leni Robredo Hopes COMELEC Will Delay Voter Registration Deadline

Leni Robredo Urge COMELEC To Extend Voter Registration Period

LENI ROBREDO – Philippine Vice President Leni Robredo urged the COMELEC to give Filipinos more time to register for the 2022 elections.

The voter registration in Metro Manila was previously suspended due to quarantine restrictions and it resumed just 24 days before the deadline. Huge crowds of voter applicants trooped to various offices of the Commission on Elections (COMELEC).

The poll body previously said that it will not be extending the registration. Instead, it extended the registration hours and open offices in shopping malls. It has been suspended for 5 and a half months in 2020. On September 2, the Senate urged the COMELEC to extend the voter registration period for 1 month to prevent disenfranchisement of voters.

The upper chamber adopted Senate Resolution No. 851 seeking extension of the registration period up to Oct. 31. Senator Francis Pangilinan said lots of people sent them photos of voter applicants waiting in long lines.

“Marami ang nagpadala sa amin ng mga litrato at nakita rin natin na, kahit pa sinasabing extended na ang voter registration hours, ay talaga namang mahaba ang mga pila sa labas ng ilang mga Comelec offices,” Pangilinan said.

Leni Robredo joined the calls for COMELEC to extend the voter registration for 1 month. In her weekly radio show, the politician said that while she understands why the poll body has to set deadlines, it has to be considered that the Philippines is under “extraordinary circumstances” right now.

Naiintindihan natin ‘yung Comelec kasi dahil digitized yung eleksyon, kailangan talagang gumalaw na sila so kailangan maglagay ng deadline. Pero baka naman possible na i-delay pa siya for another month para lang siguradong makahabol yung mga hindi pa nakakarehistro,” she said.

Leni Robredo said many Filipino voters might be disenfranchise if the registration deadline will not be extended. She said, “‘Yung mga pictures sa registration ang hahaba ng pila. Marami ‘yung gusto talaga mag-rehistro so sa akin lagi naman akong in favor doon sa  hindi madi-disenfranchise yung mga botante natin.”
