President Duterte Allows Firefighters to Carry Firearms

President Duterte has approved the bill allowing the firemen or firefighters to carry firearms aside from water cannons.

Firefighter is a personnel trained in firefighting and rescuing individuals who need help. These workers were primarily tasked to extinguish hazardous fires that threaten life, property, and environment.

President Rodrigo Duterte has signed the Republic Act 11589 or “An Act Strengthening and Modernizing the Bureau of Fire Protection and Appropriating Funds into law.

The law institutionalizes the modernization of the Bureau of Fire Protection. The new measure allows the firefighters to carry guns on their duty. Duterte said that firemen also face many dangers during their duty aside from fire.

“In the mind of some, bakit mo bigyan ng baril ang mga bumbero eh sunog lang ang kalaban niyan? You know, the organization itself and the individual bumbero they are exposed to a fraught of so many dangers,” Duterte said.

The Philippine president said that fire personnel have been experiencing threats from fire victims insisting that their areas should be prioritized. He also explained that firemen would have confidence to perform their jobs if they are secure.

President Duterte also reiterated that many Filipino people do not obey the authorities unless they carry guns. He is confident that the newly-approved bill would enhance the BFP’s operation.

“I am therefore confident that the passage of the [BFP] Modernization Act will help boost the morale, efficiency, responsiveness and professionalism of the BFP in realizing their mandate,” the president added.
