Treasure Hunter Dies of Suffocation Inside Cave in Maguindanao While Two of his Colleagues Escaped
COTABATO CITY – A treasure hunter has passes away due to suffocation inside a cave in Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao.
A 31-year-old treasure hunter identified as Anwar Zacaria went inside a cave in Datu Odin Sinsuat to search for valuables but died of suffocation while his two colleagues successfully escaped.
Maguindanao Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer (PDRRMO) Nasrullah Imam said that the three were digging for alleged hidden gold bars when the incident happened. The survivors said that the cave is fumed with toxic substance.
“Eventually something irregular happened inside the cave that fumed toxic material”, Imam said.
Imam also said that PDRRMO received a report that a miner was trapped inside the cave. The incident happened last Tuesday (July 27). The office together with Bureau of Fire Rescuers, Datu Odin Sinsuat Police, and the Makabagong Rescuers Team immediately conducted a search and rescue operation.
The rescuers were able to retrieve the victim’s body at 4:00 pm on Wednesday (July 28). The rescuers have also experience hardships to rescue the victim due to the difficult terrains before reaching the location.
“It was a difficult retrieval operation as the cave opening is so small, and that the rescue and retrieval team needed to trek through difficult terrains leading to the cave,” Imam added.
