Duterte Floats “Delta” Lockdown Possibility If Variant Threat Continues
DELTA LOCKDOWN – During his final State of the Nation Address, President Duterte floats the idea of a new lockdown due to the Delta Variant.
Currently, the Delta Variant is among the most transmissible variants of concern. Due to the spread of the Delta Variant, countries such as India and Indonesia are now in disarray as caseloads continue to rise.
In the Philippines, there are currently 119 confirmed delta variant cases. However, due to the confirmation of local transmissions, researchers from OCTA warned that a surge could be seen.
In lieu of this, Duterte said:
“It seems that it is really dangerous, we really have to go back to a lockdown..“
However, he stressed that due to the bleeding economy, the Philippines couldn’t afford any more lockdowns if we don’t want to see “irreversible damage”. As such, he says that he hopes the Delta Variant “will not go any further”.
According to an article from One News, Duterte continued saying:
If it requires a new vaccine, we do not have it yet. I don’t know, maybe we will just have to pray for salvation…
The pandemic has taken so much of us as a nation, but life… it can never take our courage and our spirit of bayanihan and the value of malasakit has become indelible for us Filipinos
Because of the presence of local transmissions, several cities in Metro Manila are calling for stricter protocols. Meanwhile, a “new quarantine classification” is expected to be announced soon.
