Nestlé Changes Culturally Inappropriate Translation of Chilean Cookie Name

The multinational food company Nestlé announces to change the name of their Chilean cookie over concerns it may be culturally “inappropriate”.

Nestlé’s “Negrita” cookie, which has been sold in Chile for 60 years, will be renamed “Chokita” to reflect a “culture of respect and non-discrimination.” Based on the article of News 18, the “Negrita” is a chocolate-covered vanilla cookie.

Despite protests from the star and even Spanish language officials, it translates as “little black person” – the male counterpart “Negrito,” which got Uruguayan footballer Edison Cavani punished for racism recently.

In several Latin American countries, the phrases “negrito” or “negrita,” as well as “gordo” (fattie) or the female counterpart “gorda,” are often used as endearments. It’s also aimed at those who aren’t black or obese.

Nestlé claimed the name change came following an effort to “identify themes that might be considered improper, in light of the rising awareness of brands and their visual language about the usage of stereotypes or cultural representations,” according to the company.

The packaging of the “Negrito” no longer shows the face of a black lady, as it did in an earlier iteration. According to Nestlé, the new name refers to the cookie’s chocolate and incorporates the diminutive “ita” suffix, which in Spanish means “love.”
