Dubai Successfully Makes Own Fake Rain To Fight Blazing Heat
DUBAI MAKES FAKE RAIN – When you think about Dubai, the first things that come to mind would be desert and oil. So, with that in mind, you’d probably guess that a northern downpour doesn’t often visit.
On average, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has merely four inches of rain per month. Meanwhile, in Dubai alone, this could go up to 0.4 inches. With this, the temperatures in such areas could go up to 50°C.
Because of this, development of “fake rain” was started. Recently, the UAE funded a project that attempted to use drones to “control the weather”. But, seeing how the trial runs in Dubai was a success, it seemed that the project was worth the cost.
According to an article from Unilad, the country paid over $15 million toward nine different projects, all of which focused on “rain-enhancements”. Among these projects was led by the University of Reading who is behind the “weather controlling” drones.
These nifty machines work by zapping clouds with an electric charge. The change in molecules in the clouds creates droplets that are more likely to fall as rain. As per the article, Keri Nicoll, one of the core members of the project explained:
What we are trying to do is to make the droplets inside the clouds big enough so that when they fall out of the cloud, they survive down to the surface.
This method was preferred by most countries since it doesn’t require chemicals. Meanwhile, Dubai was among the first on the list for the drones to test. Recently, they achieved heavy downpours in the city.
