Expert Warns Of Possible Dangers For Manila Bay Reclamation Projects
MANILA BAY – Following the tragedy in Miami Florida, a geologist warned of possible risks for Manila Bay reclamation projects.
Recently, an oceanfront condominium in Miami, Florida, collapsed killing over 64 people. Because of this, geologist Kelvin Rodolfo from the Earth & Environmental Sciences at the University of Illinois in Chicago fears the same fate may befall projects in Manila Bay.
During an interview with ABS-CBN, Rodolfo said:
Sa Metro Manila ngayon, kinakabahan ako dahil maraming kongkretong ginagawa na gumagamit sila ng lahar sand na galing sa Pampanga
According to him, all concrete is porous to a degree, especially those made from Pnatubo lahar sand commonly used for construction. Furthermore, he said that buildings exposed to salty air may have steel rods inside quickly deteriorate.
Additionally, Rodolfo, who is also a senior research fellow for the Manila Observatory, said reclaimed land in Manila Bay are also at risk due to rising sea levels. Along with this, storm surges and big waves frequently hit the bay.
However, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) emphasized that Manila Bay reclamation areas underwent a rigorous process. In a Teleradyo interview, Undersecretary Jonas Leones said:
Kapag gagawa tayo ng reclamation, ito ay nakabase sa masusing pag-aaral at talagang careful tayo. Pagka mali ang ating mga pagpaplano diyan, talagang mangyayari ang mga disaster na kinatatakutan nati
