Resolution For West Philippine Sea Victory Day Filed In Honor Of PNoy

WEST PHILIPPINE SEA VICTORY – Following the death of former President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, Senators filed a resolution including “West Philippine Sea Victory Day”.

The resolution sought to declare June 12 as day the country commemorates its win against China in the arbitral issue with the West Philippine Sea. According to Senator Risa Hontiveros, one of its key authors, the resolution is “essential“, not only for the Philippines, but to honor Aquino’s legacy.

Furthermore, she believes that the Philippines needs to embody the spirit of its “landmark legal victory in the Hague be kept alive in the hearts of our people through a special day of remembrance”.

Back in 2014, during Aquino’s stint as president, the Philippines brought the dispute with China before the United Nations-backed Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague, Netherlands.

The Philippines won the dispute, but China still persisted on its claims even till now. As such, Beijing continues to reject the ruling and consistently sends ships into Philippine waters.

Meanwhile, Aquino’s successor, President Rodrigo Duterte said that he would “set aside” the ruling in hopes of being under the good graces of China. Following continued harassments from Chinese vessels, Duterte said the arbitral win was simply a “piece of paper” that he could throw away.
