Authorities suspect the patient, who fatally shot security guard Arturo Budlong Jr. after stealing his service weapon on Monday, has a mental illness. Last Saturday, the suspect attempted suicide, prompting his friends and relatives to accompany him to the hospital for treatment, according to Isla.

The suspect was released from the hospital on Sunday, but returned after removing his stitches. The defendant kept attempting to exit his room while incarcerated, according to Manila police.

Budlong, who happened to be on duty at the time, advised him to stay in his room. The suspect, on the other hand, took the guard’s gun and shot him. The suspect then got into a shootout with the authorities that arrived on the scene. He was shot in the thigh and stomach by a bullet.
