PNP Chief On Face Shield Issue: Don’t Punish Violators

PNP Chief Gives Comment On Face Shield Issue In The Philippines

FACE SHIELD – Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Gen. Guillermo Eleazar said face shield violators should not be punished.

Amid the rising number of COVID-19 cases in the Philippines, the government decided to impose a “face shield” mandate. This required the public to wear face shields to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

However, several medical experts, including the health minister of France said:

These objects (face shields) cannot, in any case, be considered as protective equipment for the person wearing them, or for the people they come into contact with,”. As such, the mandate is now being placed into question.

Recently, Senate President Vicente Sotto III said that face shields should only be worn in hospitals. Meanwhile, the Inter-agency Task Force (IATF) reiterated that face shields are still required for the general public.

Furthermore, when it comes to face shield violators, Eleazar advised the PNP to simply give a warning to those without face shields. Along with this, police was given a directive to give face masks to those who are caught not wearing them.

Additionally, the PNP Chief said that they would follow IATF’s guidelines until the President decides to amend it. For now, the PNP would still enforce protocol, however, they would do so in a less aggressive manner.

Still, some residents believe that the majority of people are afraid of being caught and fined by police more than getting COVID-19. Because of this, the public simply wear these whenever authorities are present.
