HTI Claims Facebook is Number 1 Platform Being Used in Human Trafficking Activities

The Human Trafficking Institute (HTI) has declared that Facebook will be the leading tool for human trafficking in the United States by 2020.

On the anniversary of the Trafficking Victim Protection Act (TVPA), which makes human trafficking a criminal in the United States, the statement was made. According to the research, Facebook was used for 59 percent of exploit recruitment or solicitation.

Facebook was utilized for child trafficking in 65 percent of instances and 35 percent in adults. Instagram and Snapchat were utilized for child trafficking in 14 percent and 8% of instances, respectively. WeChat came in second with 43%, and Instagram came in third with 7%.

A total of 579 cases have been brought in this regard, with 165 of them being filed last year. The majority of cases are brought by the victims or others on their behalf.

The internet, according to Victor Boutros, HTI’s chief executive officer, is becoming the primary weapon for human trafficking. In this regard, Facebook has taken action to address online child sexual abuse by deleting photographs and videos that depict young people being exploited, commencing in June 2020.

Facebook define human trafficking as the business of depriving someone of liberty for profit. It also keeps track of poor interactions between parents and children on Facebook Messenger, Instagram, Whatsapp, and Snapchat.
