Cynthia Villar Says Candidate Doesn’t Need Money to Win in Elections
Political candidates does not need any money to win in any elections which said by the “richest senator” of the Philippines Cynthia Villar.
Candidates do not need to be bothered by money when campaigning during elections, according to Cynthia Villar, the wife of one of the wealthiest Filipinos, Manny Villar, because donations or gifts would come to them if they are really set to win.
According to their hearing in the Senate about the approved campaign expenditures they are evaluating for candidates of different political parties, Villar said that money would not be the basis for a political candidate to win the election. This is timely since the elections in 2022 are approaching.
“You know, kapag winning candidate ka, kahit mahirap ka maraming magbibigay sa ‘yo ng pera. Kapag losing candidate ka, kahit mayaman ka hindi ka mananalo. That’s the reality of PH politics. Huwag ninyong sabihing nasa pera ‘yan,” said Villar.
“Kapag winning candidate ka, ang daming magko-contribute. Kapag losing candidate ka, maski gastahin mo lahat ng pera mo at mayaman ka hindi ka mananalo,” dagdag pa niya. So it doesn’t matter, I think. Just make it reasonable so that we will not cheat,” she added.

The senator commented on Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon’s plan to introduce a single rate for all candidates rather than multiple rates. Drilon said, “Anyway the limitation, if it’s local then the per capita expense will be limited by the number of voters in the locality. So that’s self-limiting amount.”
“So just have one amount for a campaign expense. And I repeat, whatever is the size of the voting population would determine the total amount that a candidate is allowed to spend,” he added.
Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III, on the other hand, seems to have expressed reservations about the plan. He described the situation as unfortunate for candidates who are not wealthy or have limited resources.
“With all due respect sir, that situation applies to everyone whether president, vice president, governor, mayor. When you set the maximum of campaign expense, automatically the well-resourced candidates will have an advantage, that’s the reality of life,” Drilon stressed.
