Chinese Student Gets P1,477,134 Worth Of KFC Chicken Thanks To Loophole
WINNER WINER CHICKEN DINNER – A Chinese student gets a whopping £22,000 or P1,477,134 worth of free chicken thanks to a loophole he found.
Unfortunately, the loophole he found wasn’t necessarily ethical. In fact, it was fraud. A student identified as Xu, from Jiangsu province, found a glitch in KFC’s app in 2018. The glitch allowed him to switch between the app and the restaurant’s official Weibo account.
Because of this, he managed to get an unlimited number of free food vouchers. After getting more chicken than he can handle, he used the loophole to start his own food business.
Along with this, he told four other students how to use the loophole. According to reports from local Chinese media outlet, “The Paper”, Xu cost KFC’s Chinese parent company Yum China Holdings 58,000 yuan in six months.
Meanwhile, his four buddies scammed KFC for 8,900 yuan and 47,000 yuan each. As such, a Chinese court declared that the students were found guilty of fraud.
Based on an article from Unilad, the court read:
“Being fully aware of this bug, the convicted deliberately engaged in false transactions and illegally profited from them, which constituted the crime of fraud“.
Because Xu shared the loophole with others, he was found guilty of a five year sentence. However, the court gave him leniency when he himself pleaded guilty. Afterward, he also gave KFC an undisclosed sum in compensation.
Now, his sentence was reduced to 2.5 years with a fine of 6,000 yuan. Additionally, the other four students were sentenced between 15 months and two years in prison.
Currently, Chinese social media still debate about the legality of the case. Some say it was Xu’s fault for being unethical while others blame KFC for having a faulty system.
