Opening Rites A Non-Issue Says DPWH Chief Following Binay Statements

OPENING RITES A NON-ISSUE – Recently, Senator Nancy Binay slammed the “photo-op and ribbon cutting” of a newly launched modular hospital.

According to Binay, the “opening rites” for the modular hospital was simply a waste of time amidst the coronavirus crisis in the Philippines. However, for Public Works Secretary and Isolation Czar Mark Villar, this was a non-issue.

During an interview with ABS-CBN, Villar stated:

“I don’t wanna dwell on this issue but before we open even a road, we do final inspections to make sure all these things are complete, equipment that they need, the requirements, any final modifications that need to be made, and of course there’s a blessing”

Furthermore, he emphasized that there shouldn’t be anything wrong with blessing the building and having final inspections before opening the building to the public.

To be fair to the government, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with conducting a final inspection.  And if we bless the building, I don’t think that that should be an issue

On Binay’s part, she believed that the ribbon cutting and the photo ops for the new building left a “bad taste” amid the COVID-19 pandemic. She emphasized that patients and their families were “racing against life and time”.

Currently, the Philippines has seen all-time-high levels of COVID-19 cases coming into April. For many hospitals, they are now in a critical level of occupancy, thus, a need for more COVID-19 facilities is a necessity.
