Phivolcs Records 269 Quakes From Taal, Alert Level 2 Still Up
PHIVOLCS RECORDS 269 QUAKES – Taal Volcano continues its unrest as it produced 269 volcanic tremors in the past 24 hours.
As such, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) retained alert level 2 on the volcano. Furthermore, Phivolcs said 219 of the tremors lasted for 37 minutes. Meanwhile, 49 were identified as low-frequency volcanic quakes.
Additionally, activity at the Main Crater produced weak emissions of steam-laden plumes which came from fumarolic vents. However, even though the emissions were weak, the plumes managed to go up to 10 meters.
Moreover, Phivolcs noted that the Taal region experienced a “very slow and steady inflation and expansion” ever since the Taal eruption of January 2020. Because of this, Phivolcs believed that this increased magmatic activity at shallow depths beneath the main crater.
Under alert level 2, areas near Taal Volcano Island could potentially experience sudden steam-driven or phreatic explosions, volcanic earthquakes, minor ashfall, and lethal accumulations or expulsions of volcanic gas. Along with this, entry to Taal Volcano Island’s permanent danger zone is strictly prohibited.
