Hospitals Can Still Make Room Despite Surge In COVID-19 Cases Says Adviser

HOSPITALS CAN STILL MAKE ROOM – Despite the Philippines’ health care system at “critical capacity”, the hospital utilization rate has yet to collapse.

According to Dr. Ted Herbosa, the new special adviser to the National Task Force Against COVID-19, hospitals could still adjust. Based on an article from Inquirer, he said:

“Nakaka-adjust pa naman. If you look at the numbers, our national hospital utilization rate is still below 70 percent… Hindi pa ‘yan collapse”

Much like in 2020, hospitals have called out to the government saying they are almost at full capacity. However, according to Herbosa, the nationwide utilization rate still remains under 70 percent.

Instead, Herbosa explained that hospitals are at a period he called the “surge capacity”. He noted that the current “overcapacity” in hospitals is mainly due to the surge in COVID-19 cases which led to overcrowding.

Furthermore, he emphasized that hospitals still aren’t in a stage of collapse. “Gumagana pa naman ang mga ospital”, he says. Additionally, he noted that you could only call it a collapse when hospitals cannot treat people. “Hindi na magamot ang mga tao, namamatay na yung hindi dapat mamatay”, he explained.

Afterward, he made the past calamity with Yolanda as an example.

“Kung sasabihin ninyong nag-collapse na, hindi pa. Ang nag-collapse ‘yung kagaya nung Typhoon Haiyan. ‘Yung health system doon, talagang wasak ‘yung mga ospital, walang gamot, ‘yun ‘yung tinatawag na health system collapse”

Meanwhile, during an interview, Dr. Jaime Almora of the Philippine Hospital Administration stated that the Philippines had lost the battle against the coronavirus. Sadly, despite the government boasting of an “excellent” response, Almora said hospitals are more overwhelmed with the recent surge.
