Grade 5 Student Earns Praises From Netizens After Noticing ‘Gender Bias’ Topic in Learning Module

A grade 5 student from Polomolok, South Cotabato earns praises from the public after pointing out a ‘gender bias’ topic in a learning module.

A young boy identified as Miguel Lapid, a grade 5 student from Polomolok Central Elementary School noticed the alleged ‘gender discrimination’ in one of his module. His father Michael Jess Lapid takes a picture of it and uploaded it online.

In the photo, it can be seen that the module instructs the students to match the words given below to describe to what gender they belong. Based in the photos, the words “astig, malakas and matapang” describes male while “iyakin, mahinhin, and paiba-iba ang modo” describes women.

Miguel also writes a later for the Department of Education regarding the ‘gender bias’ quiz on his module. His dad Michael noticed that the kid was stuck in that part of the module and notice that something is wrong with it.

“Nakita ko na stuck siya sa part na ‘yon ng module. Nalilito siya kung paano niya sasagutan kasi sabi niya may mali sa module, pointing out na may gender bias daw, Iniwan namin siya to work on his module and later on, pinakita niya na ‘yong letter niya,” Michael said.

Michael told his son that nobody’s perfect and taught him that everyone could make mistakes.
