Volcano Erupts Near Reykjavik, The Capital Of Iceland
VOLCANO ERUPTS NEAR ICELAND CAPITAL – Merely 40 kilometers away from Iceland’s capital of Reykjavik, a volcano erupted causing a spectacular show of crimson in the night sky.
The red lava could be seen from miles away flowing out of a fissure in the ground near Mount Fagradalsfjall on the Reykkanes peninsula in southwestern Iceland. Meanwhile, the capital’s international airport and a small fishing port are just a few kilometers away from the eruption.
However, the area surrounding the mountain was uninhabited and geologists declared there was no expected danger at the present. As per the article, the Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) said:
The eruption began at Fagradalsfjall in Geldingadalur at about 2045 GMT tonight. The eruption is considered a small one and the eruption fissure is about 500-700 meters long. The lava is less than 1 square kilometer in size
Furthermore, they emphasized that there was little eruption activity in the vicinity near the mountain. Still, police and coast guard officers arrived at the scene to ensure the public stays away from the main road going to the airport. Additionally, the international was closed.
Currently. there were no reports of ashfall in the area but residents were advised to remain in their homes due to risks of gas pollution. The eruption on Friday occured in the Krysuvik volcanic system which doesn’t have a main volcano.
As such, eruptions in the area are called as “effusive eruption” where lava flows steadily out of the ground instead of explosive eruptions spewing ash and lava into the sky.
