Minors Banned From Domestic Travel Amid Surge In COVID Cases

COVID-19 SURGE – According to an official, minors below 17 years old would be banned from domestic travel.

Currently, there is a significant surge in COVID-19 cases in the Philippines. Compared to last week, the Philippines recorded 50% more daily cases and 75% more deaths. As such, authorities looked for ways to prevent its spread.

With this, the National Task Force on COVID-19 said a travel ban for minors below 17 and elderly above 65 would be re-implemented. Based on an article from ABS-CBN, National Task Force spokesperson Ret. Gen. Restituto Padilla stated:

“Walang paghihigpit sa domestic movement maliban po sa mga bata. Meron na pong anunsiyo na paghihigpit po at ibabalik po natin ang pagbabawal sa lahat ng 17 years old and below. At ganun din po sa 65 years old and above”

Previously, the government allowed children aged 10-14 to out of their homes in areas under a modified general community quarantine (MGCQ). However, due to the spike in cases, Metro Manila Mayors decided to conduct a movement restriction yet again.

Meanwhile, the rise in COVID-19 cases came after the detection of “mutations of concern” from South Africa, Brazil, and the U.K. Furthermore, the Philippines detected a strain unique to the Philippines dubbed as the P.3. variant. But, the DOH said it would refrain from calling it the “Philippine Variant” to avoid discrimination.
