Angelica Panganiban and Coco Martin’s first onscreen partnership for “Love or Money”
Love or Money Movie Review – The much-awaited movie of Angelica Panganiban and Coco Martin was finally released last March and here is a review of their onscreen partnership.
Inquirer entertainment editor Rito P. Asilo noted that this movie showed the tried and tested formula of Star Cinema when it comes to romantic-comedy films. Differences surrounding the main characters were pointed out such as their personalities and priorities in life that led to their conflicted love story and eventually, time gave them the opportunity to heal their wounds.
However, Asilo pointed out that these elements led to “disjointed progression”. From being a romantic-comedy, it somehow became a material frequently seen on teleseryes and that included a “hyperventilating kontrabida” and this shadowed over the supposed “kilig”.
Then, the columnist mentioned the “chemistry” between the two lead characters in a rom-com setup. “Unfortunately, chemistry isn’t something you can manufacture at will,” Asilo stated. The entertainment editor added that Angelica has many funny moments in Love or Money. This proved how versatile she is from doing comedy and can shift easily to a dramatic emotion.
For Coco, Asilo noted that the actor is who he does in his primetime series, someone who is ready “to beg, steal, borrow and, in Leon’s (Coco’s character) case, grovel at the feet of the other guy in the name of love.“
The columnist added added that viewers can focus on the gloss instead and the fact that the movie featured a beautiful place like Dubai in order to disregard the “formula-gone-wrong”.
“But a pretty picture with not much compelling tale or relatable insight to back it up is bound to overstay its welcome in no time. And “Love or Money” is no exception,” Asilo stressed.
