Iceland Prepares For Imminent Volcanic Eruption Of Mount Keilir
ICELAND PREPARES FOR VOLCANIC ERUPTION – Mount Keilir in Iceland had been inactive for over 800 years. However, it recently awoke from its long slumber.
Last week, areas close to the volcano experienced a 5.7-magnitude earthquake. As such, authorities warn of a possible eruption.
According to Freysteinn Sigmundsson, a geophysicist at the University of Iceland, magma was fracturing as it moves toward the surface. Additionally, he said “we have to take it seriously“.
However, Sigmundsson emphasized that although an eruption is possible, the likelihood of it occurring was still not certain. He explained that the situation could last for hours or longer due to the tremors.
Because of this, police have barricaded roads near the volcano. But, the area near the volcano was still uninhabited and no evacuation was announced.
Meanwhile, in terms of the strength of the potential eruption, Sigmundsson expects a “small” one. Moreover, he said that it would be one with lava flowing but doesn’t anticipate a large explosive eruption. “The impact on atmosphere, flights and living conditions of people will be minimal”, he added.
