Russian Criminal Arrested In Bali After Dramatic Escape
RUSSIAN CRIMINAL – A Russian criminal who made a dramatic escape in an Indonesian immigration office was arrested in Bali.
The suspect, identified as Andrey Kovalenko, fled the office on Indonesia’s resort island of Bali in order to avoid deportation. A CCTV footage showed him keeping pace on foot with a motorcycle as he escaped, according to a report from Inquirer.
The police were deployed across the island in the hunt for the suspect, who was recently nabbed at a villa in tourist hub Kuta along with girlfriend Ekaterina Trubkina, who was also arrested for allegedly assisting his escape.
His dramatic escape on February 11 came as officials readied to deport Kovalenko back to the country based on an Interpol warrant.
Kovalenko, had finished a prison term following an arrest in 2019 for selling illegal drugs to tourists in Bali. The warrant issued by Interpol was linked to a drugs case back in Kovalenko’s home country, according to Bali’s justice and legal agency immigration division head Eko Budianto.
Trubkina, who is also Russian, could face up to nine months in prison if convicted of assisting her boyfriend’s escape, authorities added, based on the report.
The Bali police earlier arrested Marcus Beam, an American fugitive accused of scamming $500,000 from women he met online between 2015 and 2019. He had been hiding in Bali with his girlfriend.
