Duque Says PH Ready For MGCQ Implementation Amid Presence Of New Virus Variants
PH READY FOR MGCQ – According to Health Secretary Francisco Duque III, the Philippines is well-prepared for a nationwide modified general community quarantine.
Amid the pandemic, the country imposed levels of quarantine restrictions, the MGCQ being the lowest. However, OCTA researchers and virus experts warned that this move might be more costly for the Philippines in the long run.
Still, Duque emphasized that the country is “ready” for the shift. During an interview with CNN, the health secretary said:
“I think we are ready. I can say that because after one year, we have managed to keep our infection rate manageable… It is at a level that has not overwhelmed the healthcare system“
He added that the local government units, since the start of the pandemic, had increased their effectiveness in managing the transmissions. Along with this, he noted that the spike in COVID-19 cases during the holidays was weaker than expected.
You cannot discount the fact that you will have some spikes. Now we see that happening in Pasay, in Navotas, but I think the interventions of early detection, isolation, treatment, and re-integration strategies are very much in place
Last week, the National Economic and Development Authority proposed a nationwide MGCQ in a bid to lessen the effects of poverty. But, despite some level of resistance, several Manila Mayors decided to vote in favor of easing restrictions.
