New COVID-19 Cases Down 16%, Death Toll Also Falls
NEW COVID-19 CASES DOWN 16% – According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the number of new coronavirus cases has dropped by 16% last week.
A year into the pandemic, the world is finally seeing steady recovery. Furthermore, with the availability of new vaccines, the number of new cases is expected to lower as well.
Along with this, there had also been a drop of new COVID-19 fatalities by as much as 10%. Additionally, five of the six WHO regions of the world also reported a double-digit percentage decline in fresh cases.
Meanwhile, in Africa and Western Pacific, authorities have documented a 20% drop in new cases and Europe reported a 18% drop. Likewise, the Americas also saw a 16% drop in cases with southeast Asia having a 13% decrease in cases.
Based on an article from GMA, WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the number of new cases had declined for a fifth consecutive week. Based on global statistics, the number of cases dropped from 5 million to around 2.7 million per week.
This shows that simple public health measures work, even in the presence of variants. What matters now is how we respond to this trend. The fire is not out, but we have reduced its size. If we stop fighting it on any front, it will come roaring back, Ghebreyesus said.
