Phivolcs Reports Numerous Quakes, Volcanic Activity In Kanlaon Volcano

PHIVOLCS KANLAON REPORT – The Philippines Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported numerous quakes and volcanic activity in Kanlaon Volcano.

Philvocs 24 hour observation from Feb 14 to Feb 15 revealed that the volcano had 26 volcanic earthquakes. Following this, moderate emission of white steam spewed 500 meters tall as it drifted southwest and northwest.

Meanwhile, the emission of sulfur dioxide, a key element of magma, was measured at an average of 1,330 tonnes/day on the 13th of February.

Along with this, the internal structure had slight inflation of the lower and middle slopes since June of last year. This was based on the deformation data from continuous GPS and electronic tilt measurements.

These parameters may indicate hydrothermal, tectonic, or deep-seated magmatic processes occurring deep beneath the edifice“, said Phivolcs.

A day before Valentine’s, Phivolcs released a public advisory that noted a slight increase in seismic activity and volcanic gas in Mt. Kanlaon. However, despite this, the volcano is still under alert level 1.

As such, the recent activity can still be classified as an “abnormal condition” but still at a “low level of volcanic unrest”. Still, Phivolcs reminded the public to refrain from entering the four-kilometer permanent danger zone.
