Lawmaker Starts Probe Into Controversial Car Seat Law

LAWMAKER STARTS CAR SEAT LAW PROBE – Senator Grace Poe announced that the Senate Committee on Public Service will begin a probe into the Child Safety in Motor Vehicles Act.

Recently, the new law went viral after controversial provisions that require vehicles to use car seats whenever traveling with a child. Moreover, there were talks suggesting that the same provisions be implemented in public utility vehicles such as taxis, and jeepneys.

Meanwhile, six Senators had already filed resolutions that called for the suspension of the new law. According to some lawmakers, the new Child Safety law had good intentions. However, what they are questioning is the timing of implementation amid the coronavirus pandemic.

According to Poe, the extra fees and requirement needed to get child seats for cars will come at a considerable burden to many considering the pandemic. “People are barely getting by and now have to add another item in their list of expenses“, she said.

Additionally, Senate President Pro Tempore Ralph Recto, in relation to the Private Motor Vehicle Inspection Centers (PMVICs) said:

At this time of the pandemic when the people are facing a health crisis and an economic downturn that is causing suffering, fear and anxiety, our people should not be further burdened by regulatory measures with questionable procedures, imposing exorbitant fees with doubtful effectiveness, and implemented without proper public consultation
