Philippine Army, New People’s Army Clash In Leon Town, Iloilo
LEON TOWN – A clash occurred between Philippine army soldiers and suspected New People’s Army rebels in Barangay Danao, Leon town, Iloilo.
According to Panay News, the Philippine Army’s 61st Infantry Battalion (61IB) had a clash against the NPA’s Sibat Platoon, Southern Front Committee at 11:44 AM Tuesday, two days after the encounter in the adjacent village of Bucari.
On the 61IB’s side, no one was unharmed, according to Major Cenon Pancito, spokesperson of the 3rd Infantry Division.
Pancito did not disregard that a number of rebels may have been wounded or even died.
Retrieved from the clash were a homemade M79 with 12 ammunition, a hand grenade, an anti-personnel landmine with 50 meters detonating cord, 62 rounds of 7.62-MM ammunition, 15 back packs, two cellular phones, a pocket wifi, a laptop, a hand-held radio, a gas stove, assorted medical equipment, dried plant drugs, subversive documents and personal belongings.

The 61IB clashed with the NPA’s Southern Panay Front in Barangay Bucari over the weekend, as previously mentioned.
61IB commander Lieutenant Colonel Joel Benedict Batara reported that the clash occurred in the afternoon of Jan. 24 in Bucari‘s Sitio Tabionan, based on the report.
Batara said that government troops were in the area to check on the presence of the communist rebels. During the search, they encountered 30 NPA rebels, who were said to be under the leadership of Melgar “Ka Mar” Besmanos.
The encounter lasted for 20 minutes, resulting to NPA rebels fleeing in different directions.
Recovered were two improvised explosive devices (IEDs), a detonator and wires.
