DepEd Told English Not Taught Effectively In PH, Solon Urges Reinforcing Language
ENGLISH NOT TAUGHT EFFECTIVELY IN PH – Despite being amongst the well-known English speaking countries in Asia, the Philippines still isn’t effective teaching English to students according to a lawmaker.
Last year, the Department of Education received dismal performance reports on the global average reading comprehension. Along with this, the Philippines also failed to show positive numbers in math and science assessments.
With this in mind, Cebu Rep. Eduardo Gullas attributed these low scores to English not being taught effectively in the country. As such, he urged DepEd to go “all out in reinforcing English and comprehension skills in all school levels”.

Furthermore, the lawmaker emphasized that the lack of comprehension skills has “handicapped our students in math and science”. But, what do math and science have anything to do with English?
Obviously, Math and Science primarily use English as a medium of instruction. As such, proper reading comprehension of its problems and theories are needed to fully realize a solution.
“Clearly, a student who cannot readily understand English will have difficulty solving math or physics problems couched in English”, said Gullas. As such, the lawmaker urged DepEd to allocate more funds into developing better English language training programs.
