Dead Huge Whale Discovered At Waters Off South Italy

DEAD HUGE WHALE – The carcass huge whale was recently discovered and retrieved from the waters off southern Italy.

This came from a statement from the coast guard, who said that this is probably one of the largest that was ever found in the Meditteranean, according to a report from ABS-CBN News.

The whale was spotted in the sea near the popular destination of Sorrento by scuba divers from the coast guard who were following a whale calf that was in distress. The said whale calf has since disappeared.

The coastguard added that it recovered the carcass overnight Tuesday and towed it from Sorrento by sea to the port of Naples. The whale will be analyzed by marine biologists and other experts looking for a cause of death, based on the report.

Speaking of whales, pothead whales, which were commonly known as pilot whales, are a species of cetaceans who range nearly worldwide in colder waters, as well as in tropical and subtropical waters.

They are named after their pods that were “piloted” their leader. The whales are notoriously-known for stranding on beaches.

Stranding, or mass stranding, refers to an aquatic animal observed in an inappropriate location. They can be found on beaches or in shallow waters. About t 1,000 cetaceans and 2,500 pinnipeds strand yearly along the coast of US.

The binomial name of pilot whale is Globicephala.

Globicephala is a genus of pilot whale in the oceanic dolphin family Delphinidae. The name a combination of the Latin word globus which means “round ball” or “globe” and the Greek word kephale , which means “head“.
