Alleged NPA Rebel Nabbed In Borongan City, Samar

BORONGAN CITY – A suspected member of the New People’s Army was recently arrested in Borongan City, Samar on the weekend.

The Philippine Army’s 78th Infantry Battalion reported the 30-minute encounter between soldiers and communist rebels in Sitio Manaba in Barangay Pinanag-an at 3:30 PM, according to GMA News.

This followed with the arrest of the alleged NPA, identified as one Bienvenido Abagancia, aged 65, a resident of Barangay Layo, Pinabacdao in Western Samar. 

The rebel was left behind by his fellow members, who fled after the gunfight.

Recovered from the clash were four improvised explosive devices, one improvised 7.62mm rifle, one locally-made caliber .38 revolver, 16 short and long magazines for M-16 (336 ammunition), one M14 magazine (15 ammunition), three backpacks containing subversive documents, and some personal belongings.

Commanding officer of the 78th IB Lieutenant Colonel Oliver Alvior lauded the troops for their successful operation and expressed his gratitude to the residents in the area for their cooperation.

“Your Philippine Army will continue to use its military might against the armed group that threatens the peace and stability of Eastern Samar,” 

Based on the report, he also urged the remaining members of the communist group to surrender and return to the folds of law.
