Olympic Gold Medalist Arrested For Storming Capitol With Trump Supporters
CAPITOL RIOT – A two-time Olympic Gold Medalist was charged for participating in the Capitol riot prompting authorities to get him arrested.
Earlier in the month, the U.S. Capitol was stormed by thousands of Trump supporters who wanted the election results overturned. The riot caused chaos and hours worth of delays in certifying Joe Biden’s victory in the November 2020 presidential elections.
According to reports, Klete Keller had won five Olympics Swimming medals for the United States including two relay golds. However, he was charged on Wednesday for allegedly joining the Capitol riot based on court documents.
Keller was charged with “knowingly entering” or “remaining” on restricted Capitol grounds without lawful authority. Additionally, he was also charged with violent entry, disorderly conduct, and obstruction of law enforcement.
But, although an arrest was prompted, it is still unclear whether the Olympic gold medalist has been placed under police custody. Meanwhile, according to FBI Special Agent Matthew R. Barofsky, the man in the viral photos was indeed Keller.
He said he confirmed his identity by comparing photos in the Capitol riot to his driver’s license. Upon hearing the reports, The United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee condemned his actions and said:
We support the right to peacefully protest and express values and viewpoints in a respectful and lawful manner — that is what makes our democracy strong. Sadly, that is not what happened in this case.
